My problem with handgun shooting is not accuracy, I’m actually a decent shot. My problem with handgun shooting is my sloth like speed and lack of adaptable shooting styles. Every once in awhile I will take a course in practical handgun shooting; not the competitive events, but rather practical methods of using a handgun. Unfortunately, the lack of follow on practice and general lack of technical understanding of what I learned, has soon returned me to the – Stand sideways, gun and gun hand extended, other hand in pocket, follow the figure 8 pattern, target puncturing kind of shooting. What I needed was reference material I could draw upon, at my convenience. One of the reasons I selected “Tactical Pistol and Marksmanship” was the author, Gabe Suarez, a well respected authority on the subject, a decent page count and the ability to see some of the book with Amazon’s preview feature.
The book is not a guide for gun and ammo selection. In fact, the examples are a little data for both, however, the underlying logic for consideration is as valid today, as it was in 2001 when the book was published. As an example, the author indicates a an auto highly modified for accuracy may not be a good choice for defense as it may not feed reliably and it may be restrictive in ammo choices. The theme of “remember the objective” seems to be stated consistently throughout the book. There is a even a brief, but good section on holsters, belts and accessories; things that are essential, yet somehow typically are not addressed in similar books. The best parts of the book address handgun defense proficiency. There I found good photos illustrating shooting positions, clearing a jam, speed reloading, sight pictures, even the dance step footprints on the floor that emphasizes stance. In short, the culmination of all those things I learned in shooting seminars, only there for the reference and a guide to quality practice.
Tactical Pistol Marksmanship is a book that will remain useful over the long haul and provide necessary information for anyone who is considering, or who has already pressed a handgun into service for home or self defense. No pet theories, no trick of the week or $5,000 hardware suggested, just time proven methods.
