I think there should be a writer’s license… or maybe a learner’s permit to ease people into the occupation as this work has the potential of having such a profound effect on others. When I finally had the opportunity to reshape my life and to write about firearms, it probably took a few years before my personal fog lifted and I began to realize why I wanted to write and to understand what purpose I might serve. People write for the same reason children believe in magic or why, at the age of reason, people often become quite attached to religion; we all hope we might find some greater reality that holds the promise of a brighter future.
After all of this time, I don’t believe I am a better writer, but I believe I am a more honest writer in that I have learned to start product reviews with a blank piece of paper and without the overheard of crusading consumerism or a need for sensationalism.
What is this place called… Bullshooter?
The Handgun Bullshooter is a combination shooting rest and maintenance vise. Its structural surfaces are made of 3/4″ thick high impact polyethylene. Contact and support surfaces are padded or made from high density foam.
A protective cover is provided to shield surfaces from gases escaping from cylinder gaps. When used as a shooting rest, the Bullshooter is configured as pictured, left.
The unit’s adjustable front feet can be used to raise and lower and/or level the rest. The locks on either side of the barrel rest may be loosened to adjust height or angle. The grip clamp can be used to secure a handgun when set up as a maintenance rest, it is not used when shooting. When taking the rest to the range, it pretty much folds up flat and the hand hold can be used to carry the Bullshooter.
When set up for firearm maintenance, cleaning, scope mounting, etc. The gun is secured with the vise portion of the fixture. All of the key support components move fore and aft, as well as up and down to accommodate the largest number of firearm types. I find it is easy to set up a handgun for cleaning or modifying, then carry the Bullshooter out to the range.
For me, it is necessary as a fair way of testing firearm accuracy. The Bullshooter is steady and visibility and recoil recovery are good. The unit’s construction is durable and it is easy to wipe clean after use.
So why then and what now?
The only difference between the less than glowing review of Bullshooter I wrote ten years ago and the review I’ve written today is better understanding of the product, a lot more patience in testing and a willingness to accept a writer’s ego should never get in the way of facts, or at least as they are best understood. At $65 from Brownells, the rest is an excellent value and very useful to the shooter or handloader who needs to take the uncertainties of hand held pistol shooting out of the equation when evaluating arms or ammunition.
OH Products of Michigan, the company that makes the Bullshooter, also offers accessories for the pistol rest and a whole product line that addresses handgun and long gun range and field rests
