Schedules wait for no one, including bad weather… which of course isn’t a “one”, but rather more of a thing. So let’s revise that to “Schedules wait for no one or no thing.. nothing?” Anyway, the rain drill is to set up a chronograph with UV light source under a shelter from the rain. Yes, strictly speaking, I suppose that would be called a roof. Then targets are wrapped in clingy plastic wrap and posted one hundred or more yards downrange, while running back and forth under the cover of the very old, misshaped, red shop umbrella. Odd system? Perhaps, but it gets the job done.
A couple of good handloads for the Remington
I wanted to cover live fire with a couple of handloads on either end of the application spectrum; 65 grain ballistic coefficient to give this 243 Winchester lightweight bullet some range. The 95 grain Nosler CT Ballistic Silvertip is a slick heavier weight with a tough jacket for good downrange performance and controlled expansion on deer size game.
There are, of course, many options in bullet selection from 55 grains to very low drag 115 grain. The 55 grain is excellent for prairie dogs, however, my sensibilities don’t see the 243 Winchester as a small varmint cartridge. Bullets suitable for deer usually fall in the 90 – 105 grain range, bullets construction and design impact velocity are the determining factors. The very long heavy VLD bullets typically require twist tighter than the Remington’s 9 1/2″, something like a 7″ or 8″ twist. The 95 grain Nosler Partition or Sierra 100 grain GameKing would work well with the Remington for deer.
Lots of powder choices. Those presented on the table work well and are at or near case capacity and pressure levels. The little Remington’s short barrel generates a bit of muzzle blast, but nothing too disturbing. All powder types indicated were ignited with standard large rifle primers.
