When Things Go Right...

Quite some time ago, I wrote a derogatory article about a local indoor range, The National Shooting Club. It was undoubtedly the most mismanaged operation I have ever encountered in decades as a firearm enthusiast; theft of customer’s property, unsafe operation and nasty people – not exactly a great contribution to shooting sports in the bay area. When it ceased operation as The National Shooting Club, I thought that was exceptionally good news. Fortunately, rather than suffering the loss of a place to shoot, the facility was taken over by the folks who operate Reed’s Sport Shop and is now operating under the name Reed’s Indoor Range. I had purchased firearms and shooting supplies from Reed’s Sports Shop on Alum Rock Road in San Jose, CA and they had always been fair on prices, knew the products they sold and were and professionally pleasant. When my wife and I had some free time a couple of days ago, we thought we would check out the range facility and see how it had changed under current ownership.

The place was clean, well lit and a lot more organized than it had been in the past. Counter people were friendly and accommodating and the process of checking in to shoot was made routine. We’re even able to get shooting lane choice close to a wall to make empty brass recovery easier. We only needed a few targets, but we could have just as easily purchased ammo, or rented from a large selection of handguns or similarly chambered rifles. Reed’s Indoor Range does sell firearms and most any shooting, concealed carry and general purpose firearm accessories. Training courses are offered; NRA beginners, advanced, self defense, etc. They have discount shooting for seniors, ladies night and rental credit toward purchase of a new firearm from the range facility or Reed’s Sport Shop in San Jose. Range fees are $11 per lane, $16 for two people sharing a lane and $6 for anyone over 55….years of age, not MPH. Wednesday evening women get a free rental and hour of range time, while guys as always get to pay. The web site has all of the details including certification programs and rental fees, etc.

The important part – the range area. Notable, everything worked. Targets actually traveled down range on target hangers and came back. All of the lights work, the shooting area floors were clean, the lighting is great and benches and dividers were well maintained. It wasn’t crowded, but then we got there when the doors opened on a week day. We had a great time and it appears we have regained a place to shoot near home when we don’t have time to make that 45 minute trip to the outdoor range. Based on my shotgun pattern like handgun groups, that’s probably a good thing. Reed’s did a great job bringing back something that is a benefit to all area shooters. If you get a chance, stop in, it’s the best way to support an operation that is supporting area gun owners.
